Urban II speaks at Clermont in 1095, which ultimately leads to the Crusades   B. The “People’s Crusade” a. The main leader- “Peter the Hermit” i. Went from town to town inspiring people of the greatness of this fight b. Made of ordinary people; unskilled fighters c. Very unorganized i. Arrived in Constantinople with an unprepared emperor Alexius.  He had  nothing to feed them so they were just sent into battle. d. Total disaster (defeated in August, 1096) e. Peter the Hermit survived C. The 1 st  Crusade (to Constantinople)  a. Was much more organized than “The People’s Crusade” b. No single leader; composed of numerous leaders: i. Godfrey of Bouillon
