September 1, 2005 Chapter 3: The Brain and Behavior The brain is made up of individual cells that work together. Cell Body : messenger, makes protein, receptive Dendrites : thin, bushy, widely branching fibers that extend outward from a neuron’s cell body and that receive signals from neighboring neurons and carry them back to the cell body, called the branches, receptive Dendritic Spine : Allows other cells to influence the cell, receptive Axon Hillock : analog to digital converter, the analytical part and decision maker Axon Button : neurotransmitter, expressive part Neurotransmitter : chemical substance that is stored within a synaptic vesicle in the axon terminal vesicles and that, when released, moves across the synaptic space and binds to a receptor site on an adjacent cell. Are an “on” and “off” system. Synapse : the microscopically small space between the axon terminals of one neuron and the dendrites, cell body, or axons of other neurons. Communication
