10/1/08 Class Notes: Relationships in Process 01/10/2008 10:01:00 Step One: Initial Attraction  Why are we attracted to particular individuals initially? Think about entire web of human relationships… Proximity Geographic closeness o We are attracted to people we are close to, those who are nearest us.  Affects who we meet and whether the relationship will continue o Why?  Another explanation: “interaction, not distance per se”  Physical Attractiveness Physically attractive photos rated more likeable, more friendly, more intelligent  But, relationship is somewhat curvilinear  Attractive people don’t marry more or have more successful relationships Similarity or Opposites? Birds of a feather or Opposites attract?  Very little evidence that opposites attract  We want to meet people who share our same interests
