Haptics      (touch) o Positive affect, control, ritual, etc… Touch is crucial to well being  Touch can signal affiliation:  o Hugs, hand shakes, holding hands, “roughhousing” o Associated w/familiarity o Liking  Touch can also indicate dominance:  o A punch or shove o An unwelcome arm on the shoulder How do we distinguish between touch as “liking” and touch as dominance??  Faces Kinesics     o The study of  gestures  and  facial expressions   Anything that is moving. o How do we use facial expressions to comm. o Can be intentional  (a smile)  o Or unintentional (anxiety that is conveyed thru facial expression)  o Smiling—seems universally positive although there are some  exceptions  One of the first things you can do as a baby.  o May be ‘innate’ or may be learned o Women smile more than men  Gestures Ex. Raised eyebrows:
