Volume, variety and velocity are the defining properties, that are used to measure Big data. Volume refers to the amount of data and space covered (how much data), variety is the number of types (various types) and velocity refers to the speed of data processing (how fast is data processed) (Dave, 2013). Big data is a combination of various data, can be either structured data or unstructured data. It is important for companies to find a way to control data management. Analysis of Big Data and its relation to Volume, Velocity and Variety Volume Volume can be defined as the amount of data. Volume implies Big data as enormous volumes of data within an institution or organization. In the past data was generated by employees but with the advance in technology data is generated by machines, networks and human interactions on systems or platforms such as social media which the volume of data to be analyzed is massive. With the advent of technology, social media users can store, send or receive information which is inform of data. Data can be in several format, examples include videos, music and large images. Velocity is defined as the speed or pace which data flows in from sources like a business processes, networks and machines. Also the social media data inflow speed can be measured as well and mobile devices. The rate of data flow is massive and continuous. For example in social media people can receive information in seconds and updates the latest information and often discard the old messages. With this speed data movement is real time, which can be used to help researchers and businesses make valuable decisions that are able to provide strategic competitive advantages. Data sampling can be used to solve volume and velocity issues.
