EVR1001L-0001 Spring 2017Lab 1: Easter Island: Carrying Capacity and Sustainability Lab ReportReagan NowellMaterials and Methods (20 points):The purpose of this experiment was to learn in a “hands on” fashion as to why Easter Islandcould not sustain, and consequently, collapsed as a civilization. Home to the famous Maoi statues, EasterIsland is an isolated island in the southeastern Pacific Ocean. This lab enabled time travel by means ofthe Easter Island Time Ship. There were six time periods that experimenters could explore: 900 AD,1200 AD, 1400 AD, 1500 AD, 1600 AD, and 1800 AD. Upon arrival to each time period, two tasks wereto be completed. A line transect was coordinated to examine the population density of both mulberry andpalm trees on the island. A surveyor’s wheel was used to survey the 0.002 km2of land being surveyed.Next, to estimate the population, a test was performed. A drone was used to gather this information, sothat there was no interaction with inhabitants. 162 km2total was surveyed to obtain this data. Both tests
