Progressivism: By the 1890, people are fed up and they realize that something should be done for all the problems in America. Progressivism was the solution. However there was not a unified movement which agreed upon a set of goals. It was diverse movement that attacked a variety of different problems in an attempt to build a better society. The 2 basic causes for progressivism: 1. Problems of new industrial order. 2. People were fed up with politics. There were a series of things on which they focused: - Immigration - Urban growth - Power of big business -widening class division -government corruption The progressives were not revolutionaries. They wanted to remedy the evils of the system and not to destroy it. They wanted to try to ensure that more people would benefit of capitalism and not suffer from it negative effects. Who are they? - They were urban people who tended to live in cities - They tended to be middle class - Well educated - Native born - Protestant - Men and women - They tended to be professionals (businessmen, engineers, social workers)
