Victorya Lawrence Mrs. Donna McKamy English IV Honors 31 October 2016 Why Poetry is Necessary to Mankind: “On His Blindness” Amy Lowell wrote the essay “ Why We Should Read Poetry” in hopes that she will get the reader to understand why poetry is necessary to us. She explains that poetry is a way to connect with one’s emotions and also describes that poetry is a way to understand what people are feeling and feeding one’s soul. She also says that there are no true forms of poetry but that they form used most are the ones what come from the deepness of those who truly feel what they want in the poem! She says that poetry is used to feed the soul as in the soul is consuming the words and the meaning as a human would consume food. She says that poetry comes in all forms and conveys all sorts of emotions! She says that poetry must have vitality and sincerity. Although not all sonnets have this but as you read them you can get a feel if what emotion the author wanted to convey. The reader must interpret the meaning and feeling behind the poem that they are reading. One way this is able to happen is through the Italian Sonnet “On His Blindness” by John Milton.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
