Neville Amin Unit 66 Task 2 Describe the types of drag and explain the factors that affect drag forces and enable the best lift/drag ratio to be achieved Drag is a type of friction or force acting opposite to the relative motion of any object moving with respect to the surrounding fluid. There are many types of drag that are split into different categories such as parasitic drag (form drag, skin friction, interference drag). Furthermore there is also lift induced drag (induced drag) and wave drag The parts of an aircraft that doesn’t contribute to lift for example rivets and tires etc. create parasitic drag. There are three forms of parasitic drag, which are form drag, skin friction drag and interference drag. Furthermore the frontal areas of the aircraft generate form drag; this could be reduced by the streamline. Skin friction drag is caused by the fact of the air passing over the aircrafts surface; smoothing the surfaces like riveting, paints that are smooth could reduce this.
