A01121491 Questionnaire 1 Chemical Bonding * Types of bonding and polarity. * Polar and non-polar molecules. * Lewis structures * Interactions: Ion – molecule; molecule - molecule. Objective: To analyze different types of bonding between atoms. 1 . What is a chemical bond and how chemical bonds are classified? A chemical bond is the physical process responsible for the attractive interactions between atoms and molecules, and that provides stability to the compound. Covalent bond Polar covalent bond Ionic bond Coordinate covalent bond Bent bonds Three- and four-center bonds One- and three-electron bonds Aromatic bond Metallic bond 2. Explain the difference between a polar covalent bond and a nonpolar covalent bond Polar covalent bonds means that the electrons are NOT shared equally. Nonpolar covalent bonds: since the two atoms are identical, they will share electrons equally. 3. What is a dipole moment? Dipole moment refers to the quality of a system to behave like a dipole. Dipole moment is the measure polarity of a polar covalent bond 4 . What is a Lewis symbol and w hat is a Lewis Structure? Lewis Symbol:
