These include errors in MPI infrastructure, misconduct of medical staff and care for patients with limited English proficiency (LEP). This paper will provide number of errors occurring with MPI infrastructure, medical staff errors in hospital environment occurring due to language barriers with patients, and possible outcomes from careless response to LEP patients, also, healthcare standards and laws that address these situations and recommend solutions. MPI abbreviation stands for master patient (or person) index and is one of the most important resources within the healthcare facilities. ( Peabody, 2009). It occurs in paper or electronic format. The main responsibility of MPI in the hospitals or other facilities is to link the information about the patient, providers, or member of healthcare plan with other entities within the organization. (Peabody, 2009). It’s also contains information about any activities, changes, and updates with individual’s data. In ideal world patient would receive a single MIP, through which all the medical staff would be able to identify this person. Unfortunately, this is not happening. In reality, errors like MPI duplicity or overlapping creates difficult approaches environmentally for medical professionals. (Peabody, 2009). This could result in a situation when a caregiver could receive incomplete or inaccurate data, which may lead to improper treatments, wrong diagnoses, establishing incorrect treatment plans, or even fatal outcomes. In addition, errors in MPI infrastructure can lower efficient performance of caregivers, financial and payment misconceptions, as well as security and privacy invasion to the patient data.
