History 37A: Early Rome Attendance to discussion is optional yet recommended. There are 3 exams to test material throughout the quarter. October 13, November 3, and December 1. The first will be worth 30% with the following two being worth 35%. The grading scale is the normal 80-89 is a B style format. September 25, 2006 There are three major epochs in Roman History 1. Regal period (foundation of Rome to 509 BCE) a. Legendary, latin for ‘wrecks’ or ‘rex’ b. Very little reliable material i. What we do know comes from the Romans themselves. ii. Actually historians came in to effect later in history and found out what had happened in the past and documented it. So we can get some useful information from all of these legends, but we are not sure which of them are true. 2. Republic (509 BC to 31 BCE) a. Civil war in Rome, one ruler began 3. Empire (31 BCE to CE 476) Legendary Origins and Regal Period - Mainly legendary material - First foundation myth: Romulus and Rome o Orphans were put on a basket down a river, floated and were raised by wolves. o These were the guys that actually founded the city of Rome. o When you make a city, you draw a line all around where the city should go o Remus jumped over the line, and said haha, I jumped over the walls of
