History 40A: America: 1492-1790 Professor David Igler Grades are going to be based on 25% participation in discussion sections, 5 page essay for 25%, 20% midterm, and a final that’s worth 30%. The final is cumulative. The paper will be based on a chosen question that we choose to write on. Topics will be handed out the second week of class and should be due sometime in the fourth week. September 25, 2006 Native Peoples: Demography and migrations - The land bridge o Indians supposedly came from Asia into the very northern part of North America. o It was made of land and ice - Native creation stories o Earth completely covered by water. Fish deposits sand in one place, eventually creating land. o Other stories come from volcanoes, water, winds, and other plants and animals - Population levels? o 10-100 million Indians lived in North America, in the pre-contact North America. . General concensus would show that about 40 million within Mexico, unknown in U.S. , and about 20 million in Canada.
