This can help your doctor determine whether your baby is in distress. Indications fetal heart monitoring to check on the status of the baby during labor and delivery. It can also be done before labor and delivery, as part of routine screening at the very end of pregnancy, or if you notice a decrease in your baby’s kick count. Outcomes/Evaluation outcome is geared towards the specific test that is performed. Normal results that indicate a healthy fetal status is desired. Potential Complications Risk of infection Your doctor must insert a gloved hand into the cervix to attach the transducer to perform internal fetal monitoring, This increases the risk of infection because bacteria from the glove, your tissues, or your blood can spread to the baby. Due to this risk, internal fetal monitoring isn’t recommended for women with infections that could potentially spread to the baby. Risk of fetal injury During internal fetal monitoring, your doctor tries to place the transducer on the baby’s scalp as gently as possible. In some cases, the transducer might cause some injury to your baby. Examples of potential injuries include bruising and scratching. These markings typically heal quickly without any complications. ACTIVE LEARNING TEMPLATES CONSIDERATIONS Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post) Provide support to the mother. Answer any questions that the mother might have. Most fetal monitoring test do not require special preparation but some like an ultra sound require that you have a full bladder before and like the NST they advise that you eat so that the baby will be active. Client Education inform the client about the procedure and why it will be performed. Inform the client that they can also monitor the baby by performing daily kick counts.
