Nicole Engelhuber Peter Silvestri Biology 111 19 October 2015 The Effects of Certain pH Levels on Rates of Enzyme Activity: Neutral pH had optimal activity Abstract The goal for this study was to observe the effect of different pH levels on rates of enzyme activity. It was hypothesized that an enzyme catalase would have faster activity if it were to be placed in a neutral solution. This was tested by putting an enzyme catalase in three different test tubes, one with a basic pH level of 12, one with a neutral pH level of 7, and one with an acidic pH level of 1. The results of this experiment showed that enzyme activity increases when the pH level is closer to level 7, or a neutral state, as it raised after 24.25 +/- 0.52 seconds. The paper did not raise at all in the other test tubes in the four minutes they were observed. We concluded that a neutral pH level allowed the fastest rate of enzyme activity. Introduction Molecules are held together by their chemical bonds. This is where potential energy, in the form of chemical energy resides. Cells often obtain energy derived from these chemical bonds, doing so by breaking these bonds through a chemical reaction. Few reactions are spontaneous, meaning that they do not happen on their own. Catalysts are one way a chemical reaction can occur. They carry out the chemical reaction without being changed themselves.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
