Using Your TI-83/84 Calculator: Exploratory Data Analysis Statistics I Dr. Laura Schultz This handout describes how to use your calculator to generate five-number summaries, boxplots, and modified boxplots. For illustration purposes, let’s consider the following Nielsen Report sample data: Hours Spent Watching TV per Week 1. Start by entering this data into a list. (I stored my data in a list named L TV .) Press Se and proceed to enter this data into the list of your choice. Remember to check your list to make sure you didn’t make any typos. 2. We will use the 1-Var Stats command to generate a five-number summary for this data set. Press S and use the > key to scroll to the CALC menu. Press e to select 1: 1-Var Stats . Next, enter the name of the list where you stored the data and press e . 3. Your calculator will generate two screens full of output. Use the ; key to scroll down until you see the components of the five-number summary ( minX, Q 1 , Med, Q 3 , maxX ). For this data set, the five-number summary is
