READING EVALUATION SHEET Student Name: Article Author and Title: Rene Descartes; “Mediations on First Philosophy” What is the purpose of the article? (One sentence in your own words, include page number indicating where the author stated his purpose for writing the article) To overthrow all of his beliefs (page 171). Make your own outline of the article: (Outline format) -Descartes decides to overthrow all his beliefs, but to do so by only going after the underlying principles. -His senses are the ones that have deceived him most, but they also are responsible for things that he could not possibly doubt such as his grasping the paper he is writing on. -Others things cannot be doubted such as the human body, shapes, or certain mathematical facts such as basic addition. -Descartes decides to revert to his old beliefs because otherwise he would spend his life in the confusion of problems he has caused by raising such questions. -Reflecting upon the previous mediation session, Descartes states simply “I am, I exist.”
