Results and Discussion The purpose of this lab was to accurately and precisely determine the densities of an unknown liquid and solid. A liquid of unknown density was massed and measured properly in order to determine its density in grams per milliliters. A beaker was tarred on the balance and then 10 milliliters of liquid was pipetted into the beaker. The value of the mass was determined and then the density could be calculated. In addition, a solid of unknown density was also massed and then placed in a graduated cylinder of 20 milliliters of water. The change in volume on the graduated cylinder after inserting the solid was the volume of the solid. Once again, the two measurements needed to find density were determined and the density of the unknown solid was found. In order to determine if the procedure would yield accurate results, it was tested with water which has a known density of 0.997 g/mL. The mass of beaker was 50.517 g after adding a volume of 10 mL of water to beaker, the mass of the water was determined to be 9.831 g. Therefore, the density of water was calculated to be .983 g/mL which gives a percent error of 1.4%. Since this percent error shows that the experimental data was accurate, the experiment to calculated the densities of the unknown liquid and solid could begin.
