At the completion of this course, students are provided with the opportunity for earning college credits from Hagerstown Community College. Students study the psychological approach to understanding behavior and mental processes to assist them in better understanding themselves and others. Students will explore the major topics the field of psychology including the science of psychology, the biological perspective of behavior and mental processes, sensation and perception, consciousness, learning, memory, cognition and language, development, motivation and emotion, sexuality and gender, stress and health, social psychology, personality, psychological disorders, and psychological therapies. There is additional emphasis put on student research (surveys and statistics), activities, discussions, and outside of class activities. This course provides expectations and opportunities for students to work independently, at an accelerated pace, to engage in more rigorous and complex content, and to develop projects and products that reflect that level of understanding. Instruction in this course is at the college-level. Students will be expected to complete challenging assignments, at the college-level, both in and out of class. Prerequisite: Successful completion of HIST 101 (US History) ESSENCE COURSE DESCRIPTION: Designed as an introductory course and prerequisite to other psychology courses, general psychology introduces the data, concepts, theories, principles, and methods of contemporary psychology while examining the dynamic factors that influence behavior. Total of 45 hours of lecture.
