Dear Mr.Smarmy, It has been brought to my attention of your thorough protest of the pamphlet A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift , to be taught in our schools, but I assure you it is a crucial part of our student’s education. In English language, students are taught specific types of persuasion, including more traditional ways like authors using direct evidence for their claims and more unorthodox ways. One of these ways of persuasion is satire, which means the author pokes fun of something to prove a point, and satire authors usually use lots of exaggeration with claims they don’t actually believe. A Modest Proposal is an excellent example of this, although quite crude, Swift was using satire to point out the oppressive landlords of Ireland, Swift wasn’t serious of his cannibalistic claims. It may be difficult for some, as quite a few students couldn’t tell if Swift was truly serious about his claims, and that is why we teach them to read with a keen and analytical eye.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
