Michael Joyce 4 .11.08 History 100 Human vs . God Relationships The Aeneid, Meditations, and Passion of Perpetua offer similar ideas about how one should conduct themselves in society . In Virgil’s Aeneid, the main character Aeneas explains how the Roman values fall on loyalty to the state, family and the gods . In Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations, he explains through his quotations that the only way for a man to be overpowered is by letting himself be overcome by his emotions, and that he doesn’t necessarily believe in God . Finally in Perpetua’s Passion of Perpetua, she explains how her imprisonment and talks with her father about renouncing her Christianity only made her beliefs stronger . Each of these works has a source of good beginning with Aeneas in The Aeneid . Everything that Aeneas does during this poem is related to fate . His fate is predetermined, and whatever happens happens under the discretion of the gods . Aeneas’ actions are for the good of his state . This poem agrees with the Roman pietas of being
