Syllabus FIN 302 – Fundamentals of Finance Fall 2008 Instructor: Rodger Peterson E-mail: [email protected] Textbook: Essentials of Corporate Finance (6 th edition) Publisher: McGraw-Hill/Irwin Authors: Ross, Westerfield, Jordan ISBN: 0073405132 Course Description: This is the core Finance class for our undergraduate program. It introduces the student to fundamental financial tools and concepts such as the time value of money, capital budgeting, and financial risk. NOTE: To be eligible to major in finance, you must earn a grade of B or better in this course. Note, in particular, that a grade of “B-” does not qualify. Prerequisites: MAS 201 or equivalent, ECO 211, and ACC 211 Course Objectives: v Become familiar with the corporate financial environment v Understand the basics of financial valuation v Understand the concepts of risk and return More Specifically: v Develop an understanding of, and ability to apply, the following concepts: Introduction (Chapter 1) The goal of financial management, agency problems, primary and secondary capital markets Financial Statements, Taxes, and Cash Flow (Chapter 2) Market vs. book value, net income vs. cash flow, average vs. marginal tax rates Time Value of Money (Chapters 4 and 5) Present value, future value, Rule of 72, PV and FV of multiple cash flows, annuities, annuities due, deferred and off-cycle annuities, perpetuities, frequency of compounding, effective annual rate, annual percentage rate (APR), amortized loans Interest Rates and Bond Valuation (Chapter 6) Bond valuation, interest-rate risk, bond yields, bond features, bond ratings, types of bonds, the bond market, nominal vs. real rates, the Fisher Effect, term structure of interest, yield curves Stock Valuation (Chapter 7)
