Chapter Five - in some states the judiciary compete for elections - The cotemporary condition of political parties is described with three words 1. decline 2. decay 3. demise - 60% of people identify themselves as being within a political party - 40% are independents - American Political Parties are composed of three interacting parts 1. the party organization 2. the party in government 3. the party in the electorate - ticket splitting – voting for a democrat in one office and republican in another - Persistent intraparty factions make opportunities for the opposing party (ex. Ohio with the Ohio Restoration Project (super Christians)) - Pragmatism – democrats moving towards the center of the spectrum - Why only a two party system – only the winner gets to hold office, Americans are used to two parties - Divided Government – having a democratic president and a republic senate or visa-vi - Unified Government - Both houses are controlled by the same party - Dealignment – the weakening of an individuals attachment to a political party
