Acts 15 and the Jerusalem Council A. An issue related to an Occasion: a. Paul and Barnabas had been sent by the church at Antioch on a missionary venture to Cyprus, Pisidian Antioch, Iconium, Lystra and Derbe (Ac. 13:1-14:18); Jew and Gentiles were converted b. But, Jews came from Antioch and Iconium and “won the crowd over.” They stoned Paul, dragged him outside the city and left him for dead c. Paul and Barnabas returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch and encouraged the disciples. They appointed “elders” in each church and dedicated them prayer and fasting d. They returned to Antioch and reported on what God had done through them – an “open door” e. But teachers came from Jerusalem saying: i. “Unless you are circumcised, according to the custom taught by Moses, you cannot be saved.” f. This brought sharp debate from Paul and Barnabas, and they (along with others) were appointed to go up to Jerusalem to see the apostles and elders about this question g. They spread the news about Gentile receptivity to the Gospel
