God a. Westminister Catechism: God is a spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable, in his being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and t ruth. i. Left out love b. Compared to reality, which is beyond space and time, thus, the value of metaphor. Is it better to say that God exists or God does not exist? i. Pascow The Wager I t is better to believe that God exists and be wrong then say he doesnt and burn in hell ii. Fredrick Buchner Wishful Thinking 1. Since the Reality that religion claims to deal with is beyond space and time, we cannot use normal space and time language but metaphors 2. The very language distinguishes a limit 3. Exist= Ex Sistere to stand out from 4. To say God doesnt exist is a better metaphor because it doesnt have the same amount of limits a. God is beyond normal existence b. I ts better not to say it. c. The finite will never be able to describe the infinite I I I. Religion a. Re=again b. Ligare=connect or attach c. Religion=to connect again IV. Why study theology? a. The study of God is a form of worship (Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind , and strength) b. I t is fulfilling to you as well as it is fulfilling to God! V. The Task of Theology a. The Beginning of Christianity i. Coming of God in the Flesh miraculous explosion b. Knowing God i. Traveler and local on his balcony, traveler has hundreds of questions, local is an observer and is secure in his house ii. We can approach theology as the traveler or a balconeer c. The task of theology is to take the core of truth, examine it, interpret it for the age, and preserve it. i. What is the Core of Truth 1. The life, teaching, nature of Christ 2. The miraculous explosion a. Gods intervention 3. Kerygma first teaching within the church ii. Examine it 1. Assumes that youve identified the core 2. Know inter-relationships, implications, etc. iii. Interpret it for the age 1. Only after sufficient knowledge and examination can you interpret it for the age 2. Make it understandable, then you can make it applicable to the age a. Language b.
