Rebirth of arts of Ancient Greek and Romans, renewed interest o Humanism – focus on man and his life here on earth, what people can accomplish o Courtly patronage – Medici family, more opportunity to work outside of the church o Printing press – Guttenberg developed moveable type, music began being printed around 1500 Music more accessible Velum, paper more expensive in Middle Ages; now music available for “amateurs” (still have to be wealthy) o Reformation and Catholic Reformation – 16 th Century; Martin Luther broke off from church – Lutheranism, Calvinism, etc. – different Christian sects with different beliefs of music’s function within the church Looking at differences in art of medieval ages and Renaissance helps show the differences also exhibited in music o Natural depiction of the figure o Perspective o Expression on faces o
