Protects us from o Pathogenic microorganisms o Their products o Cancerous cells Key trait: the ability to discriminate between “self” and “nonself” The two major themes of the immune system: o Specificity Ability to distinguish subtle difference in chemical  structure o Diversity Ability to recognize a nearly limitless number of foreign  molecules o Two lines of defense for the body Innate immunity Present at birth, barrier against wide range of  foreign invaders regarless of their identity or hosts  previous exposure to them Non specific Examples Skin-bacteria, viruses cant penetrate skin  unless breached Mucus membranes: protective lining;  mucus; cilia Antimicrobial enzymes in saliva, tears Low pH of stomach acid and oil on skin Internal defenses Phagocytosis: Phagocytes ingest and  destroy foreign particles/microbes
