Dear Mom and Dad, It has been a long time since I have been in contact with you, but I would like to inform you that I am caught in the middle of Vietnam War. When I left home I volunteered for the Marines because I wanted to prove something to you and more importantly to myself. I had always wished for a more exciting life and thus I prayed to fight in a war for my country. I was willing to die for considerably less, for a few favorable remarks in my fitness report. Here in Danang I lead my troop’s everyday, but ever since I have become a lieutenant, the concept of war doesn’t seem to hold the same value as I thought. We were informed that we were on a defensive mission and to provide security for South Vietnamese Army, but the objective of our mission is a total letdown. This is a war I am not ready for; I truly don’t know what I am doing here and who my enemy is. The situation is becoming worse every single day and every step is
