a) Cost Effective – no server maintenance, or costly bandwidth. Process Communication 1) Client/Server Process – process which first contacts another process is the client. The contacted one is the server process. 2) Processes communicate via sockets. Messages travel from one socket in an application to another socket in another application. 3) Socket - software interface between a TCP and process. 4) Application Developer has the choice of transport protocol, and lots of control on the application side of the socket, but not much control over how the packet moves from host A to host B. 5) Port/IP Number – Port number specifies which application process the message is for, while the IP address specifies which host the packet is routed to. Web and HTTP 1) HTTP – application layer protocol that defines how a message is requested by a client and delivered to a web server. a) Stateless Protocol – HTTP does not keep track of its user’s state. b)
