HUM 101 Cocolitzli: The Unknown Pandemic Plagues have been one of the most feared occurrences among people since the beginning of time. The Bubonic Plague, also known as the Black Death, swept across Western Europe killing twenty five million people. One of the next largest influenza’s the world experienced was the infamous Spanish flu of 1918. This fatal plague killed almost fifty million people worldwide. One of the more common influenzas that has occurred numerous times and is said to spread again is the infectious avian flu. However, one virus that we have yet to learn about is one that the entire world had mistaken for centuries as an innocent outbreak of small pox across the country of Mexico (Lovegren). The World Health Organization has led extensive studies on pandemics over the decades. One conclusion the WHO has come to is that an epidemic is bound to occur every twenty to thirty years. This statement seems plausible if we take a look at it on a smaller scale. Everyone has experienced the common cold at least once in their life. Unfortunately, every year we find ourselves with the same symptoms of the common cold. Our bodies are supposed to build immunity towards these infections that we already have had.
