CDE 232 Chapter 4+ Prenatal Development OBJECTIVES: Identify the 3 periods of prenatal development, discuss teratogens & fetal alcohol syndrome The Course of prenatal development Conception to birth About 9 months or 38 weeks 2 ways of dividing it up: o 3 trimesters each trimester = 3 months o 3 periods Germinal Embryonic Fetal The Germinal Period First 2 weeks after conception Creation of the zygote through fertilization Continued cell division Differentiation of cells o Blastocyst- inner layer of cells, late becomes the embryo o Trophoblast - outer layer of cells, later provides nutrition & support for the embryo Implantation of the zygote in the uterine wall The embryonic period 2 to 8 weeks after conception is now called an embryo
