CDE 232 Chapter 7 + Discuss attachment and strange situation Identify 4 patterns of attachment Attachment - affectional/emotional tie that one person forms with another person binding them together endures across time, not a characteristic but a relationship Functions of attachment - tends to form around 6 months of age, keeps infants close to caregivers who provide safety, enables babies to explore world within safe context, gives oppurtunities for caregivers to provide stimulation through play activities, provides basis for later positive development Theorist views of attachment - infant will become attached to the person or object that provides oral satisfaction (Frued), feeding is not crucial element in attachment; contact comfort in very important (Harlow), 1 st year may be the key time frame for the development of attachment; trust (Erikson), newborns may be biologically equipped to elicit the attachment behavior from caregivers (Bowlby) 8 Steps to Protocol - 1.
