Chapter 13 1. What were Justinian's major goals, and how did he try to achieve them? How successful was he in actually achieving these goals? Justinian’s major goal was to reestablish the Roman Empire throughout the Mediterranean world. He attempted to achieve this goal by having his army, under the authority of his general, Belisarius, wage war on his opponents. He started out in North Africa and after defeating the Vandals he moved on to Sicily, the Italian Peninsula, and in 552 he defeated the Ostrogoths. Justinian achieved his first goal of restoring the Roman Rule throughout the world. His second goal was to codify and simplify the Roman law for the masses. To do this he had his jurist Trebonian make a systematic compilation of imperial edicts. He ended up making four volumes of law which went on to be the bases of all law throughout Europe, hence his second goal was achieved. He also built many great building and restored those that were destroyed. Among those that he built was the great church called Hagia Sophia, the Church of the Holy Wisdom. 2. Why does the chapter use the phrase “zenith of Byzantine civilization” to describe the period from 750 to 1025? The chapter uses the phase “zenith of Byzantine civilization” to describe the period from 750 to 1025 because zenith means a time in which one is most powerful or successful, and the Byzantines were the most powerful during the years 750 to 1025. The Macedonian emperors experienced great economic success during this time period and the city of Constantinople flourished. The Byzantines under the rule of the Macedonian emperors also achieved great political and military successes. Well educated people oversaw the collection of taxes, domestic administration, and foreign affairs. In the tenth century, the Byzantine experienced their greatest military achievement in their victory over the Bulgars which resulted in the annexation of Bulgaria to their empire. They
