Lecture Notes: Monday November 28: Deviant Careers: Six Themes in Literature on Deviant Careers : 1. Entering Deviance: Discusses how and why people get into deviance It is the topic most written about-easy to gather data about Policy makers are interested in this topic- o They can learn how to keep people from turning deviant o Learn about “at risk” people Looks at protective factors v.s risk factors Bonds to society Community involvement Programs/activities Basically we need to look at this topic more so as to prevent people from entering deviance b/c our country is spending too much money on incarceration. Plus the jails are over flowing. 2. Training and Socialization: Not discussed in sociology This is when they learn to norms and essentially learn the scene of their particular form of deviance Varies by associational form o Loners- self-taught because there is no deviant sub-culture o Peers- socialization occurs o
