1/23/08 Lecture Notes Week 2 **TV is about selling audiences to advertisers. TV in the U.S. is organized to persuade the viewer to keep watching Flow – the characteristic organization, and therefore the characteristic experience, is one of sequence or flow. This phenomenon, of planned flow , is then perhaps the defining characteristic of broadcasting, simultaneously as a technology and as a cultural form.” The Experience of Flow – how TV works, both technologically & culturally, by ALWAYS being on. Flow is like a constant flow of goods being offered via TV, including segmentation of shows w/ commercials, etc. We experience the flow , but often try to ignore it (leaving the room during commercials) Flow works to keep people tuned in and always watching the TV. Interruption and Sequence TV Interrupts Itself o Commercials o Promos o o Station identifications o News segments The planned flow is interrupted when there is catastrophic breaking news (9/11) We Interrupt Ourselves o Flipping o Muting o Surfing o Leaving **Presently, YouTube, TiVo, etc., break flow up.
