The mass media includes newspapers, magazines, television, the Internet, etc. We are in a state of “demassification.” ( Demassification - people are accessing the media about topics they are interested in). There are now tons of alternative media options, from direct marketing to telemarketing, from grocery store checkout TV’s to mass e-mail. Forms of communication: Intrapersonal : just me. You alone Interpersonal : you and me. You and one other person Group communication : me and the class. You and a group Mass communication: reaching the largest possible audience. Names and events: Johannes Gutenberg : inventor of the printing press Benjamin Day : Started the Penny Period with the New York Sun . Thomas Edison: Phonograph (recorded sound); cylinders; reproduced sound; talking machine Gatekeepers : government, editors, industry groups, pressure groups. The Associated Press (1848): New York journalists who met to share stories; journalists should write in a nonpartisan tone What is the Awareness Instinct? The Penny Press Period : put news into the hands of anybody; focused on things that common folk were interested in; simple, straightforward and easy to follow writing; factors that made the Penny Press Period possible included industrialization, urbanization, immigration, and literacy.
