Pre-Class:  Week 05  Letters from Boginda: This primary source is a firsthand account of the symptoms and progression  of sleeping sickness. Nkema, the case study here is shown as becoming manic and crazy due to  sleeping sickness. The indifference of the author when describing Nkema’s death is interesting in  that he had become so violent that his death was a relief to the community.  Keywords: responsibility, sleeping sickness, madness, restraint, harmful vs. harmless victims  Little Skeleton: This primary source is on varying white perspectives on sleeping sickness in the  Congo. As many of these tales are from missionary workers, the idea of Christianity is a theme.  The discovery of the mechanisms by which sleeping sickness spreads (made by a white  biomedical doctor), is praised, and the tsetse fly is discussed in depth. Also discussed are ways to  combat the illness, including stopping mobility of Africans and isolating the infected community.
