Week 2 Discussion 1Rachell HerrENG 125 Introduction to LiteratureInstructor: Karen Risley7/20/17“The Gift of the Magi” by O. Henry chapter 4.4 is the story I chose for my discussion. Christmas was just a day away, and a young devoted couple Della Young and her husband Jim Young wanted to buy each other a lovely gift for Christmas, but all she had saved was $1.87, andJim didn’t have very much money himself because they were poor. Jim income decreased from $30 to a measly $20 per week. “Three times Delia counted the money, one dollar and eighty-seven cents and the next day would be Christmas. There was nothing to do but flop down on the shabby little couch and howl. So Della did it; which instigates the moral reflec¬tion that life is made up of sobs, sniffles, and smiles, with sniffles predominating.” (Clugston, 2014). The joy of self-sacrificial love is the greatest gift of all, and that, ultimately, is the gift these two share.
