Vietnam War challenged the legitimacy of the JWT Built-in relativity is ignored Operational justice is apt to be chauvinistic and nationalistic Augustine Catholic canonists, Hugo Grotius, Jean Bodin, Alberto Gentile (16 th  century) Then int’l lawyers become concerned with international law and not  international justice, JWT gets pushed aside until after WW2 Nuclear Dilemma The Just War in Historical Perspective Jus Ad Bellum Last Resort Declared by Legitimate Authority Morally Justifiable o Self Defense against Agression o Correction of an injustice that has gone uncorrected elsewhere o Reestablishment of a social order that will est. justice o Undertaken with the intent ion of bringing about peace Jus In Bello Proportionality Discrimination o Double Effect Thucydides claims wars occur for “honor, fear, and interest.” Where does “right” come in, what is “right,” and what is justice? The Goal of JWT is to LIMIT the frequency of war and to impose moral rules
