Amnesty International and HRW The Big NGOs! 12/04/2007 11:27:00 “R.O.L.E.S.” of HR NGOs R esources o lawyers (esp. in the US—but are there too many?) o Technology o Management by walking around—going face to face O rganization o Structure! A table of organization! Something  formal! o But what is really significant is the  informal  organization that occurs in  all HR groups and indeed in all entities beyond the individual (like  within the family, corporation) L eadership E xecution of  objectives o Objectives ” is the key word o An objective is something that you hope to achieve, a goal. Look at  mission statements! E.g. advocacy, raising of resources, gathering information, raise  awareness, publicity (NYT regularly runs full page ads for  Darfur) hope to increase parity (through education?) build relationships/increase understanding with other  organizations (crucial in networking!) Choice of  S trategies o Plans of action!  Actually going through with what you intended to do  once you have achieved R.O.L.E. o The most complications arise here NGOs shift strategies because preceeding factors change HRW begins as Helsinki Watch in 1975—the 3 people on it had  no idea where they were going and now look at what they have  created! (Most effective in CW’s opinion)
