Chapter 1 Notes 1. Types of Computers a. Personal Computer (PC or Microcomputer) – Designed to meet the computing needs of an individual. (Macintosh and IBM-Compatible PC’s which include Compaq, Dell, Gateway, etc. First such computer made by IBM) b. Desktop Computer (also a PC) – Designed for use at a desk or in an office. Runs small programs to help individuals effectively accomplish work and gain Internet access. Dell leading computer in desktop computers. c. Notebook Computer – Fits in a briefcase, portable. d. Laptop Computers – Larger than notebook, too big for briefcase. Smaller laptops sold than notebooks. e. Subnotebooks – Notebook computers omit components to cut down in weight and size. Some are less than 3 pounds. f. Tablet PC – LCD screen notebook that the user can write one using special-purpose pen or stylus. g. PDA (personal digital assistants) – handheld computer with built-in software for scheduling appointments and e-mail. h. Pen computers- Accept handwritten input (Blackberry) a PDA i. All-in-one computers – iMac which is a monitor with everything else built in except mouse and keyboard. j.
