IR 100 Midterm Exam Guidelines Please write the name of your TA and your section time on the front of your bluebook. Please write your name on the BACK of your bluebook (NOT the front). You will have 40 minutes to complete the midterm exam. Students who have provided the appropriate disability certification letter from DSP to the instructors will have the amount of extra time approved by that letter. Part I Identifications On the midterm, you will have to describe the significance of fou r of the following. American exceptionalism: has been historically referred to as the belief that the United States differs qualitatively from other developed nations, because of its national credo, historical evolution, or distinctive political and religious institutions. The difference is typically expressed as some categorical superiority, to which is usually attached some alleged proof, rationalization or explanation that may vary greatly depending on the historical period and the political context. (WIKE) Bay of Pigs: The 1961(April 17-20) Bay of Pigs Invasion was an unsuccessful attempted invasion by armed Cuban exiles in southwest Cuba, planned and funded by the United States, in an attempt to overthrow the government of Fidel Castro. This action accelerated a rapid deterioration in Cuban-American relations, which was further worsened by the Cuban Missile Crisis the following year. (WIKE) Berlin Airlift Post war Germany was divided into three sections--the Allied part was controlled by the United States, Great Britain and France and other part by the Soviet Union. The city of Berlin, although located in the eastern Soviet half, was also divided into four sectors --West Berlin occupied by Allied interests and East Berlin occupied by Soviets. In June 1948, the Soviet Union attempted to control all of Berlin by cutting surface traffic to and from the city of West Berlin. Starving out the population and cutting off their business was their method of gaining control. The Truman administration reacted with a continual
