Definitions 1. qualitative research- collecting information that cannot be subjected to numerical measurements 2 2. quantitative research- gathering data that represents quantities 2 3. descriptive statistics- simple, when one or two numbers used to organize/summarize data that is easy to comprehend 3 4. inferential statistics- makes inferences about a population based on data gathered from a sample 3 5. variable- anything that has more than one level or can assume multiple values 16 6. measurement- the process of assigning numbers to objects so that the properties of the objects are reflected in the numbers 16 7. nominal level of measurement- numbers represent categories, a classification scale 18 8. ordinal level of measurement- numbers indicate rank order, no interval is giver 18 9. interval level of measurement- numbers represent equal intervals with an arbitrary zero point 19 10. ratio level of measurement- numbers represent equal intervals with an arbitrary zero 19 11. content alanlysis- analyzing the content of written, visual, or spoken material 12 12. survey- translating research problems into items on questionares 14 13. population- the large group which the researched is interested in 14 14. sample- a subset of the population 14 15. random sample- collecting data from a sample that is representative of the population and research 14
