Overall, the photo story was a composition of photos and captions meant to show the heroism of the soldiers but also the human inside each American soldier. The most obvious message that is portrayed is the bravery in our troops. Most of the captions describe the soldiers’ mentality of leaving no man or item behind which goes into not only physical strength but also strength in character and perseverence. However, the photo story’s agenda is not to portray the military tactics of these troops but to reveal them as real Americans with weaknesses and hardships. In addition to portraying the men as victorious, the picture story also plays them up as human. The writer does this by including the soldiers’ sensitive moments as well as their rough. The way the article is written, it describes the winter as hard to endure and doesn’t hesitate to imply that the soldiers suffered for an American victory. The story starts out with a paragraph that describes “fantastic odds” that the soldiers had to endure creating sympathy and admiration among the general readers. The caption directly
