Notes for General Psychology (10-1-08) -The central nervous system (CNS) -Made up of the brain and spinal cord -Protection for the CNS: (1) Skull and backbone (2) Meninges: three membranes covering the brain -Meningitis: inflammation of the meninges (3) Cerebrospinal fluid system -Fluid system that nourishes and cushions the brain -Fluid flows through ventricles in the brain -Enlarged ventricles may be a sign of damage in the brain -E.g., results from boxing and sometimes schizophrenia (4) Blood-brain barrier: semi-permeable membrane that prevents some chemicals from passing to the brain -Blood capillaries tightly packed together -Sealed by a type of glial cell -Glucose actively transported across the barrier -Some breaks in the blood-brain barrier -E.g., Area postrema -Vomit reflex -Set off by bad tastes (poison) -Spinal cord: connects the brain with the rest of the body through the peripheral nervous system -Mediates some reflexes by itself -E.g., Patellar reflex (knee jerk) -E.g., Pulling hand from a hot stove
