Appendix D How to Record an Emission Spectrum with the MeasureNet Workstation Recording an Emission Spectrum 1. While at the MeasureNet spectrophotometer press Station Number and type in your Station Number, and press Enter. The screen will display Ready to Scan . 2. Cover the end of the MeasureNet fiber optic cable with a finger and press Zero. Continue to hold your finger over the end of the fiber optic cable until the system indicates Ready to scan . This calibrates the Spectrophotometer to zero intensity (no light). 3. Press the Intensity button. Heat a nichrome wire in a Bunsen burner flame until the wire turns orange. Adjust the position of the burner relative to the fiber optic cable until the intensity reading is somewhere between 2500-4000. Press the Intensity button again. The screen will display Ready to Scan . The Bunsen burner flame must never be closer than 6 inches from the tip or the heat will cause damage to the fiber optics. 4.
