Music Class 1. Ballads a. Storytelling convergence of poetry and music i. 3 types 1. Imported ballad-little changed from original form 2. Naturalized ballad-still recognizable as original, but adopted new  characteristics from new cultural surroundings 3. Native ballads-wholly new stories indigenous to the US a. Tend to be less introspective and more focused on big  scale things such as criminals, executions, and disasters  ii. Characteristics 1. Strophic form-all stanzas sung to the same tune 2. Stanzas-as many as it takes to tell the story, or as many as the  singer cares to sing or can remember 3. Ballad/common meter-four line stanzas, 8 syllables alternate with  6 syllables 4. Iambic foot-stressed syllable followed by unstressed syllable (ta- da ) 5. Pentatonic scale- a scale commonly used a. 5 notes as opposed to 7 (only black keys on piano) b. Barbara Allen-imported ballad i. H.J. Beeker ii. Vocal and guitar iii. Strophic form
