Nonverbal communication – all behaviors – other than spoken words – that communicate messages and have shared meaning between people. Electronic communication is not included. Shared meaning means that a national culture agrees on how to read a behavior. Interaction adaptation theory – individuals simultaneously adapt their communication behavior to the communication behavior of others. Principles of Nonverbal Communication: 1. Often Ambiguous – mean different things to different people. 2. Regulates Conversation – Who talks when and to whom (turn-taking) is based on nonverbal communication. 3. More Believable than Verbal Communication – Actions speak louder than words. 4. May Conflict with Verbal Communication – (Mixed message) when verbal and nonverbal messages contradict. Nonverbal Communication Codes: 1. Visual-Auditory Codes a. Kinesics (Body Movement) i. Delivery Gestures – signal shared understanding between communicators, like nodding head. ii.
