Chapter 2 Strategy: an organization’s long-term course of action designed to deliver a unique customer experience while achieving its goals Structure of Today’s Organizations 1. Corporate Level: where top management directs overall strategy for the entire organization 2. Strategic Business Level Unit: refers to a subsidiary, division, or unit of an organization that markets a set of related offerings to a clearly defined group of customers. - strategic business unit level: managers set a more specific strategic direction for their businesses to exploit value creating opportunities; if the company is less complex the corporate and business unit may merge 3. functional level: groups of specialists actually create value for the organization; department - cross functional teams: a small number of people from different departments who are mutually accountable to accomplish a task or common set of performance gals Organizational Foundation (why) -core values -mission -organizational culture 1. Core Values: the fundamental, passionate, and enduring principles that guide its conduct over time - developed by an organization’s founders or senior management and are consistent with their essential beliefs and character -capture the heart and soul of the organization -guide the organization’s conduct 2. Mission: a statement of the organization’s function in society, often identifying its customers, markets, products, and technologies
