Everything I could possibly need to know for the Astronomy final! Astrobiology o Recognize life: respire, reproduce, metabolize o What will life be based on? Carbon Forms long and complex molecules Organic molecules Carbon is versatile and abundant o Many organic compounds come from space. We formed from interstellar clouds with these compounds already present. o What do we need? Water! Water us essential fro life as we know it It controls basic biological functions Planet can’t be too hot (steam) or too cold (ice): Europa and Mars seem ideal candidates Europa very likely has an ocean beneath its icy surface. There appears to be no liquid water on Mars, but in the past, there is evidence for an ocean and rivers SETI o 1/3-1/2 of all American believe we’ve been visited, but it seems unlikely o How many advanced civilizations could there be in the Galaxy? Should depend on: Rate of solar type star formation (R * ) Fraction of stars that have planets (f p ) Number of life-suitable planets per solar system (n e ) Fraction of those Earth-like planets in which life arises (f
